WDFW expands Entiat River Chinook Salmon season

OLYMPIA — The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced Monday changes to the summer Chinook salmon fishing season on the Entiat River, set to begin earlier than usual this year.

The new regulations, effective July 9 through September 30, 2024, open salmon fishing on the Entiat River one week ahead of schedule and extend the upstream fishing boundary. The affected area now spans from the river mouth at the railroad bridge to the Mad River Road Bridge crossing near Ardenvoir.

Officials cite an anticipated surplus in the summer Chinook return, which is expected to exceed hatchery broodstock requirements. The change aims to increase recreational fishing opportunities while maintaining protection for endangered spring Chinook populations.

Under the updated rules, anglers will be permitted a daily limit of six Chinook salmon, with a minimum size requirement of 12 inches. All non-Chinook salmon must be released, and a night closure will be in effect throughout the season.

WDFW emphasizes that the fishery will be monitored, with the possibility of closure if any impacts on ESA-listed spring Chinook are observed. Anglers are urged to regularly check the department's emergency rules website for potential updates.

The decision reflects a balance between providing recreational opportunities and ensuring the sustainability of the river's salmon populations. All other regulations outlined in the 2024-2025 Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet for the Entiat River remain in force.
