Sweets crush AppleSox 13-0, exposing defensive woes

Posted

WENATCHEE -- The Walla Walla Sweets dominated the Wenatchee AppleSox in a 13-0 shutout victory Saturday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium, clinching the weekend series.

The AppleSox (13-7) suffered their first shutout loss since June 16, 2022, ending a streak that saw them blank six opponents. It marked only the third time in three seasons under manager Mitch Darlington that Wenatchee has been held scoreless.

Walla Walla (7-12) capitalized on a sloppy defensive performance by the AppleSox, who committed six errors. Three of these miscues came in a pivotal third inning, allowing the Sweets to push across three runs. The visitors continued to pile on, scoring five runs in the fifth and four in the eighth to seal the lopsided victory.

The loss raises questions about Wenatchee's ability to maintain their strong start to the season, as they now face the prospect of a series sweep on their home field.

Wenatchee will attempt to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday at 5:35 p.m. local time. The team is hosting a "Bark In The Park Night" sponsored by Earthwise Pet Shop, with fans encouraged to bring their dogs to the ballpark.
