Nahahum Canyon wildfire contained, evacuation orders lowered

Posted

CASHMERE — A wildfire that threatened residents in  Nahahum Canyon has been contained, allowing officials to lower evacuation orders by Monday evening.

The Wynnie Fire, which began as a structure fire early Monday morning near Cashmere, quickly spread to surrounding vegetation. By early afternoon, the blaze had grown to approximately 10 acres, prompting a Level 2 evacuation order for residents from Mile Post 4 to Wynnie Lane.

Multiple fire agencies responded to the scene, including Lake Wenatchee Fire and Rescue and Chelan County Fire District #6, deploying brush trucks and specialized equipment suited for the canyon's dry, steep terrain.

As of 5:30 p.m., Chelan County Emergency Management announced that firefighters had successfully stopped the fire's progression and established a fire line around the perimeter. Consequently, all fire evacuation levels were reduced to a Level 1 fire advisory.

The Nahahum Canyon Road, which had been closed at the 8600 block to all but local traffic and property owners, is expected to reopen as the situation stabilizes.

While the immediate threat has subsided, officials urge residents to remain vigilant and stay informed.

The cause of the initial structure fire that sparked the wildfire remains under investigation.
