Nahahum Canyon wildfire prompts evacuations

Posted

CASHMERE — A rapidly spreading wildfire in the Nahahum Canyon area near Cashmere has prompted evacuations and a multi-agency response as firefighters battle the blaze in challenging terrain.

The Wynnie Fire, which reportedly began as a structure fire early Monday morning, quickly spread to surrounding vegetation. By 1 p.m., according to local authorities, the fire had grown to approximately 10 acres.

The Chelan County Sheriff's Office issued a Level 2 evacuation order ("Be prepared") for residents from Mile Post 4 to Wynnie Lane in Nahahum Canyon, upgrading from an earlier Level 1 advisory. The area is home to over 100 residents.

Multiple fire agencies have responded to the scene, including Lake Wenatchee Fire and Rescue, which deployed brush trucks and specialized equipment suited for the canyon's dry, steep terrain. Chelan County Fire District #6 is focusing on structure protection as the fire continues to spread.

Air support has been requested to assist ground crews in their containment efforts. The cause of the initial structure fire that sparked the wildfire remains under investigation.

Local officials have closed Nahahum Canyon Road at the 8600 block to all but local traffic and property owners.

The Tillicum Riders facility in Cashmere has opened its doors to house large animals affected by the evacuation orders.

As fire crews work to contain the blaze, residents throughout the region are reminded to remain vigilant given the dry conditions and increased fire risk in the area.
