DRYDEN — Wenatchee Valley College students Dillon Cornelius and Juan Martinez presented a groundbreaking prototype on July 7 to modernize operations at the Dryden Dam. Collaborating with Chelan PUD engineers, the students presented their new electromechanical control system, which features improved data collection and automation, using a 3D model and physical prototype.
The Dryden Dam, a low-head weir that operates like the crest of a spillway on the Wenatchee River, is crucial for local agriculture, diverting water into the Highline Irrigation Canal. It also plays a vital role in salmon research and hatchery programs for the Chelan PUD, Grant PUD, and Yakama Nation through its fish ladder and two fish-trapping systems. Currently, the dam's operating system relies on a rubber bladder filled with river water to regulate irrigation canal water levels and attract fish for collection.
Cornelius, who learned about the Dryden Dam as a Chelan PUD student employee last year, identified the modernization of the dam's decades-old mechanics as a potential capstone project. He and his study partner, Martinez, embraced the challenge. You can see the technical details of the students’ capstone project at the Chelan PUD website.
Dr. Sai Ramaswamy, faculty and program coordinator for engineering technology at WVC, praised the students' dedication: "As graduates from WVC's engineering program, I'm incredibly proud of how Dillon and Juan have put their heart and soul into this project. Dillon and Juan have applied what they've learned in our engineering program to benefit our community."
Commissioner Garry Arseneault commended the students, saying, "I would like to congratulate you on a project well thought out and well implemented. The students coming before the board are impressive. This is fabulous. I'm enthused to see the quality and level of students graduating from Wenatchee Valley College."
Chelan PUD regularly offers student employment opportunities in various fields, including engineering, business analytics, information technology, and energy conservation. These positions are typically advertised between February and early May at chelanpud.org/careers.
