Peshastin Library dances through renovation with free Folkloric Classes and Community Programs

PESHASTIN - Despite the temporary closure of its building for renovations since April, the Peshastin Library is bringing the community together through a series of free, Mexican folkloric dance classes for local youth this summer.

The classes, designed for children ages 8-12, will be held at the Peshastin Dryden Elementary School gym on Tuesdays from 5-6pm and Thursdays from 11am-12pm. The instructor, Sandy Zárate, is a certified dance instructor and owner of the Sanzar Dance Company, where she teaches bilingual classes.

Librarian Clare Morrison expressed her enthusiasm for the library's first long-term instructional series. "I'm really, really excited that we're going to be able to offer this kind of longer term series and have a community performance at the end. [It's] kind of a unique thing that we don't often offer at the library," Morrison said.

Zárate, who grew up and studied in Oaxaca, Mexico, has a lifelong passion for dancing. She has performed in the state's largest festival, La Guelaguetza, and now dedicates her time to promoting a deeper understanding of art and culture through dance. Her goal is to help future generations of youth appreciate the beauty and richness of Mexican folklore.

The Peshastin Library has been working diligently to maintain its active role as a space for community activities, both virtually and physically, thanks to the support of PD Elementary's library and gymnasium. In addition to the dance classes, the library has been organizing various programs during the renovation period.

One such program is the weekly ukulele circle, which takes place at the PD Elementary library each Wednesday at 5:30pm. The circle welcomes locals of all ages and skill levels to strum along to provided music packets together. "It's a really great group of folks and we're always open to new members as well, at all different levels," Morrison said, describing the program with excitement.

As part of NCW Libraries, the Peshastin Library has also been hosting a range of fascinating virtual events. On June 20, published author and LGBTQ+ journalist Putsata Reang will give a presentation.

The Peshastin Library's efforts to engage the community during its renovation period demonstrate the vital role that libraries play in bringing people together and fostering a sense of belonging. By offering diverse programs and events, both in-person and online, the library continues to serve as a hub for learning, creativity, and social connection.
