Recently an opinion letter was published in the Leavenworth Echo about management issues at Cascade Medical Center (CMC). Among the issues cited were decreased quality of patient care, employee dissatisfaction with the work environment, and concerns about financial viability.
After reading the opinion letter you have to wonder if the individuals were writing about a Medical Center in another city or state. We, the undersigned, have been patients and supporters of CMC for many years. We have received exceptional care, have some of the best doctors and staff in the state, and haven’t had to wait very long to be seen. In a national survey ranking the best critical access care facilities, CMC was ranked in the top 20 out of more than 1300 hospitals.
We have watched as CMC ambulance services have been increased and expanded, staff and management have been upgraded, computer programs and access to patient records have been improved, and finances have been strengthened.
As a small community, we are fortunate to have a resource like CMC under the direction of exceptional leaders. Many of us came to the Leavenworth area after we retired. In other areas where we lived, we experienced high turnover of medical staff and long wait times to be seen.
Nearly all businesses experienced a downturn due to COVID related issues. Typically, the downturns led to financial difficulties and negatively affected morale. The authors of the opinion letter have tried to use temporary impacts from COVID to make sweeping and misleading conclusions about the status and management of our hospital.
