Eight CHS Track and Field Athletes Heading to State

Posted

Qualifying for the State 1A Championship is a tall order for high school track and field athletes. They must finish first at the district meet in their event. Or, for a few exceptional athletes, they qualify by meeting a rigorous qualifying time, height or distance.

Head coach Bill Davies was excited going into Districts on May 19th, hosted by Cashmere. “It’s a big week for sure,” he said. “There are so many amazing kids. We only have a few that have an easy qualification to state, and many others that will need to have a great day.”

Eight CHS athletes ended up qualifying at Districts. The state 1A championship is held May 26th to 28th at Eastern Washington University’s track.

Photos, taken by Kevin Farrell, show the qualifying athletes from events at an earlier home meet. A few athletes that gave notable performances but didn’t qualify include junior Kai Lewman, 2nd in the long jump, freshman Karla Cacho, 2nd in the 300m hurdles with a PR of over two seconds, junior Edie Walker, 2nd in the pole vault with a PR of 8’6”, and sophomore Finna Gillikan, 2nd in the high jump.

“It’s such a joy to be a part of the excitement and success of these wonderful kids,” said Davies. “I’m very blessed.”
