WENATCHEE — Leavenworth local James Munly has been honored with the 2025 Bob Parlette Award for his outdoor recreation advocacy and stewardship.
The award was created by TREAD, a nonprofit organization focused on sustainable outdoor recreation, in honor of Bob Parlette (1941-2017). Parlette was a tenacious visionary whose commitment to public service and outdoor recreation left an indelible mark on North Central Washington. The Bob Parlette Award is an annual recognition given to members of the community who have created a legacy through stewardship and public service.
Munly was nominated by Maggie Richter of Our Valley, Our Future and Mic McLane of Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance.
“James has served at the Leavenworth Ski Hill for over 10 years and brought notable improvements to the mountain bike trails, ski operations, and more that serve our community's access to outdoor recreation,” said Richter.
When Richter read about the legacy of Parlette, she said Munly was the first person who came to mind. Despite having lived in Leavenworth only five years, Munly made a lasting impression on her and her family, from cheering on her three-year-old learning to ski on the magic carpet, to helping organize trail work parties and clean-ups.
“I know his impact reaches far beyond what I’ve personally witnessed. James brings a long history of investment in trails, young people, and outdoor stewardship. I’m thrilled to see him honored for his dedication and hard work — much of it carried out quietly, behind the scenes," said Richter.
McLane noted Munly’s influence in establishing organized mountain bike advocacy in the region as a founding member of the first Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance chapter, the Central chapter. McLane added that Munly has had a consistent presence and made a lasting impact on the community, from his work with the Forest Service at Leavenworth’s Ski Hill, featured in documentary “Pedal-Driven,” to mentoring volunteers and shaping sustainable trail systems.
"James has been a steady advocate for outdoor recreation in the Wenatchee Valley for decades, always working to build trust with land managers and secure lasting access for mountain bikers,” said McLane.
Munly was presented with the 2025 Bob Parlette Award at TREAD’s 4th Quarter Ex Officio Roundtable meeting in November. Linda Evans Parlette was in attendance to honor her late husband's legacy of public service and community engagement and to present the award to Munly.
Previous recipients of the Bob Parlette Award include Matt Rose (2021), Ken Paton (2022), Al Murphy (2023), and Diane Priebe (2024).
