LEAVENWORTH — On Oct. 11, Icicle Creek Center for the Arts (ICCA) will invite the community to walk, run, dance and play their way along its inaugural Give a Hoot Art Walk.
The event – which is about a mile long – will guide participants through live music, interactive art installations, and hands-on creative stations located throughout the shared ICCA and Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort campus.
While the event is described as a fun run/walk, it is by no means a race. The walk aims to promote physical health through joyful movement, while fostering social connection, creative expression, and community pride. With activities along the way, the course is designed for participants to stop and go at their own pace, in a choose-your-own-adventure fashion.
These stops will not only showcase some of ICCA’s artists and programming, but also invite participants to experiment with something new. The stations will be accompanied by some of ICCA’s featured artists – such as thought coach and creative writer Holly Thorpe, the Marlin Handbell Ringers, and artists from the Singer, Songwriter, Storyteller series, to name a few – introducing skills like water color painting, improvisation, artful listening and more.
“We’ve really curated activities that anyone can plug into,” said ICCA Executive Director Monica Miller.
Both the activities and the walk itself are designed for all ages and abilities. ICCA also created a sliding scale for the participating fee, in order to lower the financial barrier. The map and entertainment access is free, but more perks are available on increasing tiers, such as drink tokens, raffle tickets, and swag.
Proceeds from Give a Hoot will directly support ICCA’s Visiting Artist Series and other art education programs. The Visiting Artist Series brings in performing artists from around the Pacific Northwest who both teach and demonstrate their creative processes in classrooms and through performances. The artists often work directly in schools to meet, perform for and work with students.
The art walk activities will be scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 11. A leisurely lap along the route is an estimated one hour, but participants are welcome to take longer. Light beverages and concessions will be available; guests are welcome to bring a picnic or visit the new Lupine Market and Cafe, which debuts a few days before the event. Those planning to attend Oktoberfest later that day are also invited to leave their cars parked at ICCA, which is a stop on the free festival shuttle route.
“I hope people have a hoot at Give a Hoot, and that they leave thinking that they can come back anytime,” said Miller.
