Firefighters respond to brushfire in Tumwater Canyon

Update: CCFD 3 reported that the fire was contained at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night. The U.S. Forest Service has taken over and will continue mop-up over the next several days. All county resources are off the line. The cause of the fire is believed to be human caused.

LEAVENWORTH – Firefighters responded to a brushfire in Tumwater Canyon at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.

The highway remains closed in both directions at the Icicle Road and Highway 2 roundabout at milepost 99 to milepost 85 at Coles Corner with no estimated time of reopening, according to Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT). WSDOT recommends using SR-207 and Chumstick Highway as a detour. No vehicles over 26,000 gross vehicle weight are allowed on the detour.

The fire is located just outside of Leavenworth near milepost 98 on Highway 2, and is burning in heavy timber with over 40 firefighters on scene. Response included units from Chelan County Fire District 3 (CCFD 3), Lake Wenatchee Fire and Rescue (LWFR), and Washington Department of Natural Resources, and a rotor, according to updates from CCFD 3. CCFD 3 was unable to provide an estimated size, containment or probable cause as of 8:30 p.m.
