PLAIN — Motorists should plan for travel delays on Chumstick Highway as paving takes place along the 19-mile stretch from Aug. 10-14.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said contractors would be paving sections of the road starting in Leavenworth and working north toward Plain.
Delays could be up to 45 minutes as a pilot car guides travelers through the work zone between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.
WSDOT said the paving will precede Chelan County’s plans to build a retaining wall at the site of a landslide that occurred this past winter, expected to begin Aug. 28. The project’s original Aug. 10 start date was delayed due to concerns of nearby wildfire activity. It is located on Beaver Hill, between mileposts 12.3 and 12.4 of Chumstick Highway.
Chelan County built a retaining wall on Beaver Hill to stabilize the slope in 2016. While the wall held up during the December 2025 weather event, a slide occurred just past it, officials said. The project will extend the existing retaining wall by 150 feet, as well as repair and stabilize nearby slopes with additional fill and a new guardrail.
