Chelan County seeks volunteers to write pro/con statements on 911 tax measure

Posted

WENATCHEE — Chelan County is recruiting residents to serve on “for” and “against” committees that will write arguments on a proposed sales-tax increase supporting RiverCom and the region’s 911 communications infrastructure.

The measure, set to appear on the Feb. 10 ballot, would raise the local sales-and-use tax by one-tenth of 1% — equal to one cent on a $10 purchase — to fund emergency communication systems and facilities at RiverCom. The proposition would pay for financing, design, construction, equipment, operations and long-term upgrades to the regional 911 system, according to the ballot language adopted under Resolution 25-93.

The tax would only take effect if Douglas County adopts the same measure.

Residents interested in serving on either committee must live in Chelan County and submit their name and contact information to the Chelan County Commissioners Office by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4. At least one member on each committee must be willing to be listed publicly in the local Voters’ Pamphlet.

Committee volunteers draft the official “for” and “against” arguments and rebuttals that will be published in the upcoming voters’ guide that will include the measure.

Applications may be emailed to the commissioners’ office at BOCC.Clerk@co.chelan.wa.us or you can call with any questions at 509-667-6545.
