Washington State Parks announces 'free day' for Sept. 27 in recognition of National Public Lands Day
The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission wants the public to know that Saturday, Sept. 27 is a state parks 'free day.' Day-use visitors will not need a Discover Pass to visit state parks.

The 'free day' is in recognition of the 21st anniversary of National Public Lands Day-the nation's largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands. State Parks 'free days' are in keeping with legislation that created the Discover Pass, a $30 annual or $10 one-day permit required on lands managed by Washington State Parks and the Washington departments of Natural Resources (DNR) and Fish & Wildlife (WDFW). The Discover Pass legislation provided that State Parks could designate up to 12 'free days' each year when the pass would not be required to visit state parks. The Discover Pass is still required to access lands managed by WDFW and DNR on these days.

A great time to visit the forest

September is a great month to visit the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Hiking trails are less crowded, nighttime temperatures are cooler, and huckleberry picking is still a favorite pastime. This is also a month when changes start occurring in national forest campground operations and other forest-related activities.

Campfire restrictions reduced on national forest lands
The ban on campfires in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest will be partially lifted on August 27. Starting Wednesday, campers may have campfires in metal fire rings in designated campgrounds in six of the seven Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest ranger districts. Naches Ranger District is the only district where campfires will not be allowed in campgrounds. Campfires will also be allowed in all federally designated wilderness areas in the forest.

Campfire restrictions in these areas were downgraded because of cooler weather and recent precipitation that has reduced fire danger in some areas of the national forest.

Kahler Glen Ladies Division holds 'Swing For Smiles' Golf Tournament
A few years ago, The Kahler Glen Ladies Division approached the Upper Valley Free Clinic (UVFC) to donate the proceeds from their golf tournament, "Mammoscram", for breast cancer screening of women living in the Upper Wenatchee Valley. When other funding sources became available to meet this need, the tournament committee brainstormed new ways to support their underserved neighbors. This was the beginning of the "Swing for Smiles" golf tournament, an 18 hole ladies golf scramble, with the net proceeds used to establish a free dental clinic (at the UVFC). The monthly dental clinic has been open for nearly a year. Licensed dentists are available for free drop in consultation. Local UVFC clinic patients are evaluated and referred to local dentists for free urgent dental care as needed. Out of area residents are referred to their own local community dentists for care. Generally, the Free Dental clinic is open on the 1st Monday of the month and closed on holidays. It will not be open on Labor Day, September 1. Instead, the free dental clinic will be open on September 8 , from 6:30 pm-8 pm. After September the regular first Monday of each month schedule will resume.
