Cascade High School students participate in global mapmaking project

Photo submitted by Judy Rector
Students in Teara Dillionís art class at Cascade High School helped to make large maps of Haiti for school children in the impoverished country. The CHS students created large, outline maps of Haiti, which are expensive and hard to find.
Students in developing countries are often at a disadvantage when trying to learn. They seldom have access to modern materials and information in their schools. I saw this to be true while working at three schools in Haiti. I have offered several teacher training seminars there and enjoy working with both teachers and students as they are eager learners. One trip, the principal asked for maps and so the next visit I took quite a few laminated National Geographic maps. However, I noted that they soon deteriorated in the wind, sun and heat as all their classrooms are exposed to the elements.

To address that concern, I decided a wall-painted map might do the trick, the bigger the better. So, I approached Teara Dillon, art teacher at Cascade High School, for help. She was excited about the possibility of having her students become involved in a global project and immediately set to seeking volunteers. Her advanced class eagerly set out to make a template about 7x10 feet. They completed it in time for my July trip, also creating large outline maps of Haiti, which are expensive and hard to find. These would go in classrooms, painted by the teachers themselves. The templates joined brushes, rollers, drop cloth, exterior house paints and Verathane packed with the hope of making a difference in student learning many miles away.
