Cascade senior Alex Fletcher hits the forehand in action against Quincy last week. The Kodiak girls won the match 4-1.
The rapidly improving junior Katie Whitten led the attack with a solid 6-2, 6-0 win over Ashley Breeden in number two singles. Junior Haley Hassinger beat Kathy Ayala 6-3, 6-0 in number three singles. Senior Alex Fletcher lost 6-2, 6-0 to Sara Rigby in number one singles.
"It was a pretty smooth match for Katie. In the first set, game one lasted no less than 20 minutes. It went to deuce so many times. Katie showed a tremendous amount of patience to play so many points in one game," said Marcia Smith, Cascade head coach. "After that game, Katie cruised through the match. Haley reeled off nine straight games to win her match."
In doubles, Matilda Thompson/Kendall Loreth beat Valenzuela/Cuevas 6-2, 6-0. In number two doubles, Kellie Kuch/ Jayme Odegard defeated Hernandez/Garcia 6-0, 6-2.
Number one boys singles Karlson Schlyer won 7-5, 6-0 over Samuel Gregg. Number two singles Michael Olmstead won 6-3, 6-1 over Jacob Durfee. Juan Mendoza beat Miguel Tapia 7-5, 6-4 in number three singles.
"Karlson came from behind to take the first set. He showed a lot of composure, getting behind and then fighting for the win. Michael used his speed and consistency to beat his opponent," she said. "Juan's opponent took the first four games, putting all the pressure on Juan. He did a good job keeping his cool and playing one point at a time."
In doubles, Jerry Mendoza/Jose Herrera lost 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 to Fregosa/Ronish in number one singles. In number two doubles, Neil Flodin/Carson Hill beat Bensch/Reyes 6-2, 6-4.
"A tough four set loss for Jerry and Jose. Things started out well. We were able to keep Quincy off balance with strong shots and lobs. Quincy stepped up their play in set two," she said. "Neil and Carson are fun to watch and have improved so much. It was a good win."
