Cascade Freshman James Sandelin (145) works for position against Marcos Fonseca of Okanogan. The Kodiaks wrestled a double-dual match against Okanogan and Omak last Saturday at Cashmere.
The Cascade Kodiaks head into the post season on Friday and Saturday with the District Wrestling meet at Cashmere. Head Coach Josh Arnold has high hopes that some of his top wrestlers can advance to the Regional meet. Top hopes for the Regional meet include junior Fernando Gonzalez (160), senior Nikita Stata (182), junior Nathaniel Merry (195), sophomore Bernardo Maravilla (220) and junior Michael Sorensen (285). The top four in each weight class advance to the Regional meet.
On Jan. 25, Cascade travelled to Chelan to wrestle one of the top teams in the state. Scrambling to fill up all the weight classes, the Kodiaks lost 66-11. The only wins came from Gonzalez and Stata.
Injuries proved a big factor in the dual meet against Omak and Okanagon last Saturday at Cashmere. Already without Cody Fritz-O'Brien, Arnold lost 106 pounder Tristin Parrish to injury. Senior Garrett Burris (145) in likely out for the season. And Bernardo Maravilla did not wrestle due to an ear injury.
Against Okanogan, the injury to Maravilla loomed large, especially after Stata unexpectedly lost his match. Even with solid matches from Gonzalez and Merry, the Kodiaks lost 36-33 to the Bulldogs.
"Maravilla and Parrish were out of the lineup with injuries. Without those two in the lineup, we would have had a better shot at winning," Arnold said.
Omak beat Cascade 45-30. The only wins for Cascade come from Gonzalez and Merry.
"We had some great individual efforts over the weekend," he said. "Fernando Gonzalez won four matches. He beat the varsity wrestler from Chelan by 15 points, pinned their JV on Friday and beat Omak and Okanogan. The match against Omak avenged a loss at the Cashmere tournament."
Arnold said injuries played a huge role in their loss to Omak.
