Kodiaks score impressive wins over Quincy, Tonasket

Ian Dunn

You know things are going pretty well for your team when you opponent fails to score a point in the first half. That was the case as the Cascade Kodiaks blitzed past the overmatched Tonasket Tigers last Saturday in Leavenworth.

Cascade led 39-0 at halftime.

"We went out guns blazing, our brand of basketball from the beginning," said Todd Fraker, Cascade head coach. "That worked for us. We had lots of energy. We contested all their shots."

The Kodiaks pressed the Tigers in the first quarter, but then played them straight up for the remainder of the contest. It was a little better for Tonasket in the second half as Cascade outscored the Tigers 16-9. Cascade won 55-9.

The Tigers were held to 13 percent shooting, while Cascade shot 50 percent. Tonasket had 33 turnovers. Sophomore forward Eliana Ala'ilima-Daley led the Kodiaks with 18 points. Junior Sydney Coffin had 13 points.

"Athletically, with some of these teams, we are able to do some things and separate," he said. "We're just trying to take each league game for itself and do the best thing for our team."

With the win, Cascade improved to 3-2 in Caribou Trail League play and 9-2 overall. Tonasket dropped 0-6 in league and 1-9 overall. In league, the Kodiaks are behind Brewster (7-0), Chelan (4-1), Okanogan (4-2) and Cashmere (4-2).

Cascade played Omak (1-5, 3-9) last night in Leavenworth. Results were unavailable before press time. Cascade hosts Okanogan on Friday, then plays at Chelan next Tuesday.

"We have not played Chelan yet. We will have played Okanogan twice before Chelan once," he said of the scheduling oddity. "We are focusing on Omak, coming out playing our game, seeing where it takes us. Then, get ready for Okanogan."

Cascade 52, Quincy 23

Fraker tried to experiment a bit in their game against Quincy on Jan. 3 in Quincy. He decided to hold off pressuring the Jacks in order to work on their man-to-man defense and half court offense, knowing Quincy relies primarily on a zone defense.

Cascade led 14-8 in the first quarter and then 24-15 at half.

"We did not have the same energy. They were hanging with us," he said. "We turned up the press in the second half. We cranked up the intensity and really separated from them."

The pressure worked wonders as the Kodiaks outscored Quincy 28-8 in the second half.

"What we found out is, with the athletes we have, we are better off playing a fast paced kind of game," he said.

Coffin led the Kodiaks with 12 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Kaycee O'Brien had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Cascade shot 33 percent from the field, including 2-for-6 from three. The Kodiaks were 12-of-26 from the free throw line. Quincy shot 21 percent from the field and turned the ball over 26 times.

Cascade 62, Northwest 16

Cascade cruised to an easy win in the Cascade Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29. Northwest was held to single digit scoring in each quarter. Coffin had 18 points and nine rebounds. Junior Johnna Rieke had 12 points.

Cascade 67, Overlake 16

The Kodiaks dominated Overlake in the opening round of the Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28. Overlake was held to 18 percent shooting in the game. Coffin had 18 points. Junior forward Gabby Brulotte had 10 points.
