Kodiaks start strong, but lose 80-55
The Cascade Kodiaks jumped out to a 10-2 lead over Cashmere in the first quarter, but the team could not sustain the energy to hold off the defending league champions, losing 80-55 on Dec. 18 at Cascade High School.
Cascade kept pace in the first half thanks to the three-point shooting of Gerardo Mendoza, Juan Mendoza and Tristin Parton, but it wasn't enough. Cashmere, behind guard Danny Boyd, crawled back to grab the first quarter lead at 17-16.
The Kodiaks kept pace in the second quarter, as senior center Santos Lopez chipped in eight points. But the Bulldogs led 35-29 at the half. The second half has been a trouble spot for the team all season, and was again versus Cashmere.
The Bulldogs outscored Cascade 25-11 in the third quarter to expand their lead to 60-40 by the end of the frame. It was too much ground for the offensively challenged Kodiaks to make up in the second half.
"We got off to a really good start, which is nice to see. But we just didn't sustain it for the whole game," said Micah Rieke, Cascade head coach. "They put a lot of pressure on us and we had a tough time getting into our offense. We have to do a better job of releasing some of that pressure on our point guard."
Cascade had a decent shooting game, going 23-for-56 (41 percent) and 7-for-15 on threes. Cashmere shot 49 percent from the field and 4-for-11 from three. The Kodiaks had 16 turnovers versus seven for the Bulldogs.
"Definitely on our scouting report, we had to limit our turnovers and limit their points off turnovers," he said. "Unfortunately, they had 20 points off turnovers, which really hurt us."
Parton led the Kodiak with 13 points. Lopez had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Gerrardo Mendoza had 11 points and six rebounds. Boyd led Cashmere with 26 points and six assists.
"We still need to continue to take care of the basketball. That needs to be a priority. We can't rush our game," he said. "We don't need to be speeding up our game. We are working on that. We'll try to get better when teams put pressure on us."
Cascade dropped to 0-2 in league and 0-6 overall. Cashmere improved to 2-1 in league and 4-2 overall. The Kodiaks played at Brewster (3-0, 5-1) on Dec. 21. Results were not available before press time. Next up for Cascade, the Holiday Tournament at Cascade High School on Friday and Saturday.
