Sorensen shines at Cashmere Tournament
Cascade 285 pounder Michael Sorensen is starting to establish himself as one of the best heavyweights in the state. The junior placed second at the Cashmere Invitational Tournament last Saturday. So far this season, the only matches he has lost has been to some the top wrestlers in the state.
"What is impressive is he beat the 12th ranked wrestler from Moses Lake in the semifinals by a pin. He dominated the entire match," said Josh Arnold, Cascade head coach. "Even with no point scored in the first period, Mike controlled the tempo of the match."
Mario Menor-Lopez and Fernando Gonzalez placed fourth, while Garrett Burris and Cody Fritz-O'Brien came up through the consolation to finish fifth. Nathaniel Merry avenged a loss Monday by pinning Alex Hernandez of Quincy. An injury forced him to default to sixth place.
"Saturday, we had a very tough morning, losing most of our matches. But the loses would not keep us from placing the hard way," he said. "Fernando nearly won his semifinal match as time expired. He nearly had the reversal."
Cascade placed eighth as a team with 89 points.
It was a tough week for the Kodiak wrestling team as the flu bug hit pretty hard. Arnold said the team was down to two full-strenght wrestlers, and despite that, six wrestlers placed in the tournament. Even so, Arnold said he would rather have guys get sick now rather than later.
"It is a great time in the season to have people down with the flu," he said. "Often times, kids get sick as the post season begins, which leaves them too weak to compete."
Last Friday, Cascade opened their home schedule with a dual match again Cle Elum. The best match of the night was between Cascade's Bernardo Maravilla and state veteran Stuart Stewart of Cle Elum. It was a close loss for Maravilla.
"It was his best match of the season, but his weekend ended next morning when came down with the flu," he said.
On Dec. 10, Cascade lost 73-6 at Quincy, in their first league dual match of the season.
This Thursday, Cascade hosts Wahluke. The team does not hit the mat again until Dec. 29 at the Eastmont Tournament.
