Cascade began their league schedule on the road last Friday at defending state champion Okanogan. And, as you would expect, the Bulldogs put up quite a fight, knocking the Kodiaks from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 66-45 win.

"They are a very efficient team. My game plan just didn't work. They capitalized on a lot of things," said Todd Fraker, Cascade head coach. "We expected to be more competitive. It was a good eye opener and good lesson. We will focus on the things we saw and try to improve those things."

Okanogan (2-0, 6-0), behind senior guard Kara Staggs, built a 21-9 first quarter lead. The Bulldogs led 35-19 at halftime. The Kodiaks just could not get back into the game, scoring only six points in the third quarter. Cascade did have a good final period, outscoring Okanogan 20-19.

Staggs, the MVP of the state tournament last season, had 29 points for the Bulldogs.

"She's never scored more than 15 in a game against us. We thought we could contain her," he said. "We had two excellent defenders guarding her. Next time, we'll have to think about how we deal with her. They just executed really well. We were a step slow and they took advantage."

Junior Sydney Coffin continues to shine for the Kodiaks with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

"Syd had a fantastic game. She played very physical. She was efficient for us," he said. "She is doing what the coaches are asking, playing confident."

Cascade (0-1, 4-1) shot 32 percent from the field, versus 50 percent for Okanogan. The Kodiaks out-rebounded the Bulldogs 46-29. Cascade had 21 turnovers, versus 16 for Okanogan.

The Kodiaks had little problem dispatching Royal in their final non-league game, beating the Knights 77-14 on Dec. 11 at Cascade. Cascade cruised to a 23-0 first quarter lead and 50-4 lead at the half.

"The first quarter we came out with great energy, getting turnovers and getting to the basket," he said. "Really encouraged the girls played at a high level."

The Kodiaks did pull off the press in the second half, but still outscored Royal 27-10. Cascade shot 68 percent in the first half, and 57 percent for the game. Royal was held to 29 percent shooting.

"We were more talented and played well and aggressive and built a lead," he said. "The biggest thing I came away with. We got a good start and played well for the entire game."

Royal had 35 turnovers versus 11 for Cascade. The Kodiaks out-rebounded the Knights 30-12. Leading the way was Coffin who had 16 points. Senior Hannah Cowan had 11 and sophomore Eliana Ala'ilima-Daley had 12 points and six rebounds.

Cascade played their second league game against rival Cashmere (2-0, 3-2) on Dec. 18. Results were not available before presstime.

"As always, that game gets the juices flowing. I expect it to be a very competitive game," he said. "To get beat by Okanogan by 21 just makes you refocus on the task at hand. We'll be ready. It's still early. We are looking at this as a journey, and to peak at the end of the season."

On Friday, Cascade plays at Brewster (2-0, 5-0).
