Kodiak grapplers start season
The Cascade Kodiak wrestling team began the season last Saturday at the Omak Invitational. Five wrestlers placed in the top four.
Cody Fritz-O'Brien was first at 158. Fernando Gonzales was third at 170. Garrett Burris (145), Bernardo Maravilla (220) and Michael Sorensen (285) each finished fourth.
"This was a great first tournament of the year," Josh Arnold, Cascade head coach. "The competition was top notch. Chelan and Warden are two schools that will compete for the state title this season. Our wrestlers were matched up against state veterans in their first match, and made their way through the consolation bracket."
Arnold said Fritz-O'Brien came out on fire in his final match.
"He was confident and aggressive the entire match. His off season camp and workouts paid off for him," he said.
The favorite match for Arnold was the third place match at 170. Gonzales was down in points going into the third round before scoring a pin in the final minute.
"The perseverance to keep struggling for a win in a match where you are down builds character in a young man," he said. "I hope it is contagious."
Next up for the Kodiaks is a double-dual at Kittitas against Kittitas and Cle Elum today. The team is at the Granger Invite on Saturday. On Monday, the team begins league competition at Quincy.
Arnold said the team in looking forward to their first dual meet and second tournament.
"Kittitas is a great squad in the B schools. Last year, they won most of the matches against us," he said. "I hope that we will make the match come down to the last few wrestlers to determine the winner. Cle Elum has a good group, but is down in numbers. Last year, we split the matches, but won because of a full roster."
The Granger Tournament is step up from Omak, he said, with squads like Chelan, Zillah and Granger there, teams that finished second, third and fourth at State.
"Last year, we had two kids place in the tournament. I hope we have six kids place. We will work hard this week and will be ready to give our best shot," he said.
