Despite a 9-13 record last year, the Cascade Kodiak girl's basketball team could be primed for a breakout season. Nearly everyone is back. There are four seniors, all with significant varsity experience, and some junior and sophomore girls that also add some talent and experience.

The four seniors are guard Kelsey Graham, forward Hannah Cowan, guard Kaelyn O'Brien and wing Sierra Guthrie. Having four senior leaders usually bodes well for team success.

"It is a nice group. They are fantastic people and incredibly hard workers," said Todd Fraker, Cascade head coach, now in his seventh season. "They have become better basketball players each year. Hopefully, we get some positive stuff from them."

O'Brien returns after sitting out the year due to injury. Fraker expects her to be a nice addition.

"At the end of her sophomore year, she was doing really well, and played varsity at the end of the year. Then, she missed all of last year," he said. "To her credit, she has worked hard to get back. She had a good volleyball season. Hopefully, she can contribute."

Junior standouts include forward Gabby Brulotte, wing Sydney Coffin and guard Johnna Rieke. Also playing significant varsity minutes last season was sophomores, forward Eliana Ala'ilima-Daley and point guard Kaycee O'Brien.

"I think we have a lot of players who have spent time on the varsity floor. I don't know if I would call us experienced. We have some players with potential," he said. "We went to the Gonzaga team camp this summer, and played in several tournaments. We played 25-30 games. We felt like we finished on a positive note."

Last season, Cashmere ran undefeated most of the season. Then, Okanogan went on to win State. No question, the Caribou Trail League is challenging.

"We have probably the toughest league in the state. A year ago, we did not know that at the time, but it certainly turned out that way," he said. "Again this year, we have the toughest league in the state, especially when you add Brewster to that."

Quincy and Brewster are new to the CTL this season.

Fraker feels like he has an athletic team, one that can match up with other teams athletically. He plans to change his style a bit this season, do more in the full court, perhaps pushing the ball more than in the past two seasons.

"We want to be very competitive. We want to peak by the end of the season, and make some waves in the playoffs," he said.

Cascade begins the season on Dec. 1 at Sultan. The first home game is Dec. 8 against Riverside Christian.
