Coming off a fourth place finish last year, the Cascade Kodiak wrestling team is hoping to keep getting better and stronger. After three years as an assistant, former Kodiak standout Josh Arnold takes over as head coach.

He feels ready for the challenge of being the head coach.

"We have a good group of returning kids that I have been with. I expect a lot more success from them," Arnold said. "Some made it to the Regional tournament. Hopefully, they make the next step to the State tournament."

Arnold is looking for big things from his two seniors, Nikita Stata (182) and Garrett Burris (145). Stata was a match away from making State last season. Arnold is looking for him to take that next step.

Junior Michael Sorensen (285) also wrestled at Regionals last year. Sophomore Bernardo Maravilla (192) made Regionals as a freshman last season. Junior Cody Fritz O'Brien completed an intensive wrestling camp in Oregon.

"We have a lot of guys who put in work in the off season," Arnold said.

There are two additional teams in the league this season, Brewster and Quincy. Arnold is hoping the Kodiaks can challenge for a top four finish.

"The first year, we finished last of six. Last year, we were number five. I am hoping we can skip some steps this year. I would like to be fourth out of eight," he said. "The teams coming back return a lot of state veterans. They will be solid at Chelan, which finished second in State. Quincy is a great team and Omak is good too."

Since the wrestling program nearly folded four years ago, there has been a move toward establishing some youth wrestling in town. Arnold praises the work of the Angie Reinhart and the youth wrestling program.

"There's been a lot of growth in youth wrestling. Angie Reinhart has raised money to get shirts for the coaches. They have money for a new wrestling room, whenever we get it," he said. "We are looking for a positive direction for Kodiak wrestling. The kid's program is a great asset."

Cascade opens the season on Dec. 1 at the Omak Tournament. The first home match is Dec. 10 versus Quincy.
