David Severance, aka Father Christmas, reads stories to children at the Leavenworth Library. Severance, a former Seattle cop, has been Father Christmas for almost 20 years.
It's hard to mistake David Severance in Leavenworth. Any kid will tell you, he looks like Santa Claus. Well, that is just the look Severance is aiming for, but not exactly Santa. He is, more appropriately, Father Christmas, a fixture in Leavenworth going on 20 years.

School District set to hire Band Director for CHS-IRMS
Since it was announced Skylar Garcia was leaving, Cascade School District officials have been actively seeking a new music teacher for the high school and middle school. Superintendent Steve McKenna wanted to get a head start looking for a new music teacher.

"Good music teachers are very hard to come by, so you want to be out quickly as possible, to get in front of the market to find the best person you can get," McKenna said.

Cascade School District adopts superintendent succession policy
Sparked by the unexpected death of the Omak superintendent from a car accident, the Cascade School Board has adopted a Superintendent Succession policy. Superintendent Steve McKenna said the untimely death of the Omak superintendent reminded him the district did not have a plan in place, in case something happened to him.

School District to take break from Columbia Virtual Academy
With much in the way of legislative uncertainty regarding the regulation of online schools, the Cascade School District is backing away from plans to move ahead next year with Columbia Virtual Academy.

The district was planning to move to level two in the CVA program, and hire an additional teacher or two. But recent developments have caused a change of plans.

Dwelling Place receives surprise $10,000 donation
The Dwelling Place, a non-profit adult family home in Leavenworth, has received the largest donation in its 11 year history, $10,000. The Dwelling Place serves as a home for five developmentally disabled men.

Bear sighting ends recess early for Osborn kids
A bear sighting last Wednesday near Osborn Elementary School prompted school officials to bring the children inside. Principal Kenny Renner Singer said the bear was sighted around 12:15 p.m. near the United Methodist Church.
