School District hires Henri as District Construction Liaison
The Cascade School District has hired John Henri to become the District Construction Liaison as the district gears up to build and improve three schools in the coming years.

Henri has 35 years experience as an engineer providing project management, construction management and construction services for private and public school construction projects.

Cascade School Superintendent Bill Motsenbocker said Henri is from Oregon, but recently relocated to Leavenworth because his daughter and son-in-law live here.

"He is a local, as of recently. Vast amount experience building schools, elementary, middle and high schools," Motsenbocker said. "He works directly for me. He will be the go-between between me and the construction company and management company."

Where there are construction meetings Motsenbocker cannot attend, Henri will be there, and keep him informed. He will also keep the school board informed, as far as what is happening with the projects.

New principal named for Peshastin Dryden Elementary School
Puyallup music teacher Emily Ross has been named the new principal at Peshastin Dryden Elementary School. Ross was named the new principal after participating in the Cascade School District's exhaustive, day long interview process, one more akin to hiring a superintendent than a school administrator.

Cascade School Superintendent Bill Motsenbocker said most were pretty exhausted by the end of it, but most liked the process.

For Collin Brunner, a paycheck isn't really necessary, but it sure is nice
Collin Brunner likes to help people. Heck, he's probably helped you. Daily, the 24-year old Leavenworth man rides his bike around town, visiting people, helping them.

Ultimately, the helpful nature of this special needs young man went a long way to securing him employment with the Cascade School District, at the bus garage. His mom, Jodi Richardson, said he is pretty independent.

"He rides his bike around town. Everyone knows him. He makes his rounds to visit people and help people. He knows Rick at the bus garage through our landlord," Richardson said. "So he was visiting Rick down there and started hanging out at the bus garage. Then he started helping out, washing buses, telling them when their lights were out. Picking up a broom and sweeping."

Before you knew it, Collin was down at the bus garage everyday, working. Richardson said he just sees what needs to be done and does it. The Special Education Department at the Cascade School District got word of what Collin was doing.

Meet the Upper Valley Christian School track team
Upper Valley Christian School in Leavenworth has been around since 1979. Over the years, many athletes from the school have competed for the public school in town, Cascade High School, and quite successfully.

But now, for the first time, UVCS is sporting its own athletic team. This season, the school has formed a track team, which will compete in the smallest classification, 1B. UVCS Principal and instructor Dwight Pflugrath is no stranger to high school athletics, having been a track coach for over 20 years.

The idea to form a track team came to him one day during P.E.

Chelan County joins non-profit groups to create Upper Wenatchee Community Lands Plan
Spurred on by the recent sale of 38,000 acres of forested land in Chelan County, one government entity and several profit groups are joining together to plan for the future.

Recently, Longview Fibre sold 38,000 acres of land to Weyerhaeuser, mostly in the Upper Wenatchee River Basin. Now, Chelan County is joining with The Trust for Public Land and Chelan Douglas Land Trust to create an Upper Wenatchee Community Lands Plan.

At a public meeting on April 2 in Leavenworth, Chelan County Commissioner Keith Goehner said they are working with TPL and CDLT to create a plan which reflects the interests and values of the different communities that are being affected.

Local actors to perform in opera production of 'The Marriage Contract'
Leavenworth Summer Theater veterans John Wagner, David Harvill and Maren Cagle are lending their talents to the upcoming opera production of "The Marriage Contract."

Wenatchee based voice teacher Leslie McEwen, who has trained a lot of singers in the area, has been involved with producing the opera productions over the past 15 years. Wagner said in the beginning, McEwen used mostly out-of-town talent, but now there are enough good singers around to fill the cast.

There are six people in the cast, three from Leavenworth. Cagle plays the soprano lead, while real life husband David Harvill plays the tenor lead. Wagner plays the comic bass role. Most of the cast has some degree of background in opera singing.

"Most of us have taken lessons. I've been taking them for decades. I sung a couple times with the San Diego Opera Chorus and sang with Seattle Opera Chorus, and small roles here and there," Wagner said. "We have a guy playing a small role as the man servant. He plays viola in the Wenatchee Symphony, but this is his first opera production. There's a variety of experience levels."
