School Board reviews student progress

The Cascade School Board was given a math lesson at the Nov.13 meeting. Osborn Principal Kenny Renner-Singer, and Icicle River Middle School Principal, Kelli Doherty, presented their "report cards." A series of colorful charts and graphs presented the facts on how the students at their respective schools have performed compared to the rest of the schools in the state.

Both principals beamed with pride as they made their presentations that showed District 28 students in the elementary and middle school performed above their peers across the state. Scatter diagrams of all schools in the state put the elementary school students above the median performance of other elementary schools. Their improvement score however, slipped a little since their last evaluation down nearly 5 percent. IRMS students continue to perform well above the rest of the state and improved their proficiency with the latest evaluation up nearly 5 percent.

Each principal reviewed trends in reading, math, writing and science as developed by The Center for Educational Effectiveness. CEE is a Bellevue based consulting firm that provides data analysis and educational support for improving educational effectiveness.

Nearly 74 percent of third grade students met standards in reading and 66 percent in math. That compares to third graders across the state of 69 percent for reading and 65 percent of math.

In fourth grade, 80 percent were proficient in reading, 67 percent were proficient in math and 97 percent were proficient in writing. Across the state those numbers were 71 percent for reading, 59 percent for math and 61 percent for writing.

Seventy-seven percent of fifth graders were proficient in reading, 67 percent in math and 83 percent in science. Statewide, 71 percent of fifth graders were proficient in reading, 64 percent in math and 66 percent in science.

Of the sixth grade class, 92 percent were proficient in reading and 80 percent were proficient in math. This compared to statewide student performance of 71 percent in reading and 61 percent in math.

Grade seven students demonstrated 91 percent proficiency in reading, 78 percent in math and 97 percent in writing. Seventh graders statewide were 71 percent in reading, 59 percent in math and 71 percent in writing.

Eighty-seven percent of eighth grade students were proficient in reading, 81 percent in math and 84 percent in science. That compares to statewide proficiencies of 67 percent for reading, 55 percent for math and 66 percent for science.

Kelli Doherty was especially proud of the reading performance measures at IRMS where 72 percent of seventh graders and 73 percent of eighth graders were rated as level 4 or advanced readers and the percentage of students who were still not meeting standards was only 8 percent for 7th grade and 14 percent for 8th grade. Doherty said they are working hard to mentor those who are still struggling.

In other business, the board approved the hiring of Paul Fraker as the eighth grade girls softball coach and Paula West as the seventh grade girls basketball coach.
