Nine Wenatchee and Leavenworth residents from the 12th Legislative District in Chelan County journeyed to Olympia on Monday, Feb. 11 to advocate for affordable housing on the State Housing and Homelessness Prevention Advocacy Day.

The Wenatchee and Leavenworth residents attending the Advocacy Day represented the following local groups: the Leavenworth nonprofit Upper Valley MEND (Meeting Each Need with Dignity) and Cornerstone Community, its home for adults with developmental disabilities, as well as Wenatchee's Women's Resource Center and Bruce Transitional Housing. These organizations provide affordable housing, transitional housing, emergency shelter and assistance services, and services for adults with developmental disabilities.

The local group who went to the Advocacy Day joined 615 others (from 44 of 49 Washington Legislative Districts) to advocate for $175,000,000 capital budget allocation for the Housing Trust Fund, which supports many area housing projects. In the past, the Housing Trust Fund has provided $500,000 in funding for Cornerstone Community Adult Family Home, and Upper Valley MEND recently submitted a Housing Trust Fund grant application for $600,000 for the Meadowlark Affordable Housing Neighborhood. The local group had meetings with Representative Brad Hawkins, Representative Cary Condotta, and Senator Linda Evans Parlette.

The Leavenworth residents representing Upper Valley MEND included: Laura Stirling, Upper Valley MEND Office Manager and Cornerstone Community Operations Manager; Elisabeth Tilstra, AmeriCorps Volunteer with MEND; Allison Kahn, AmeriCorps Volunteer with Cornerstone Community; Stuart Emig, MEND employee at the Community Cupboard; and Micah McDaniel and Joseph Dawson, Cornerstone Community residents. The Wenatchee residents representing Women's Resource Center included Carolyn Perry, Bruce Housing Case Manager; Santos Martinez, a Bruce Housing resident.
