Lenard Allen Smith
Lenard Allen Smith, life-long resident of the Upper Valley, died at his home in Leavenworth, Washington on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015 at age 90. He was born Aug. 11, 1924, the fourth of five children of Walter and Idabell Kelly Smith of Peshastin, Washington. His siblings were William, who died in infancy, Eloise, William "Mike" and Nelda.

Lenard grew up on his family's apple and pear orchard in Peshastin, and graduated from Peshastin High School in 1943. He married Bertha Bernice Hatmaker of Leavenworth on Feb. 6, 1944 in Seattle.

During World War II he entered the United States Army's Army Air Corp. in July, 1944, serving in the liberation of the Philippines. He was discharged in July, 1946.

Lofus E. Neese
Lofus E. Neese, 76, a longtime resident of Leavenworth, died Sunday Dec. 21, 2014 at his home with his family by his side.

Lofus was born on Jan. 14, 1938 to Clarence and Cora Neese at Greensborough, North Carolina where he was raised and educated. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and after his honorable discharge, went to work as a sheetmetal mechanic, installing duct work around several of the buildings in Washington D.C. He later married V. Gay Sweat at Woodbridge, Virginia and the couple later moved to Washington, eventually settling in Leavenworth.

Karl-Heinz Mittelsteiner
Karl-Heinz passed away at his home on Feb. 9, 2015, at the age of 77, with his wife of 55 years by his side. Karl-Heinz was born in Rastenburg, Germany, on April 25, 1937. He married his wife Christa Ilse Gerda Urban in Bremen, Germany, on July 17, 1959. They had two children, Heidi and Uwe. On Nov. 1, 1963 they immigrated to Renton, Washington, where they made their home for three years before moving to Bellevue, Washington. Karl-Heinz retired as an Ironworker while living in Bellevue. In May of 2000, Karl-Heinz and Christa moved to Leavenworth, Washington, where they enjoyed their retired years together.

Roger Roy Barnhart
Roger has missed his last overhead as he passed away on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015. Now his tennis opponents or partner won't have to worry about his soft-spin-serve anymore.

Roger was born on Dec.5, 1934 to Roy and Adelaide Barnhart in Rock Lake, North Dakota. Roy and Adelaide moved Jerry, Marian and Roger to East Wenatchee to get away from the family farm.

Roy soon became a carpenter and Adelaide worked in the fruit. The whole family was proud of Dad as "built the Grand Coulee Dam." In 1945, they moved to Wenatchee where Dad built houses and the family moved in then moved to the next house when theirs was sold.

Lowell F. Owens
Lowell F. Owens passed away on Friday evening, Jan. 23, 2015 at the age of 88 at his home in Cashmere. He courageously battled with Parkinson's over the last several years but he accepted this new journey with his sense of humor and not any complaints. He told us "that Mr. Parkinson moved in and he just wouldn't leave."

Thomas R. Voorhis
Thomas R. Voorhis died peacefully at home in Spearfish, South Dakota, surrounded by

family on Jan. 25, 2015.

He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on Aug. 29, 1945. He was a graduate of Chamberlain High School (1963) in Chamberlain, South Dakota. He attended Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota where he received his Bachelors Degree in Education. He taught and coached in several Rapid City Schools, Bennett County, and Takini. Tom was appointed program director in the early 1970s at the Rapid City YMCA. He was an acclaimed artist for over 35 years using several different mediums.

Esther Louise Hansel
Esther Louise Hansel passed away at OHSU Hospital, Portland, Oregon, on Jan. 22, 2015, at the age of 91. She was born at the home ranch three miles from McFadden, Wyoming, Aug. 5, 1923, to John B. King and Ruth Thobro King.

She was raised by her Uncle Herb and Aunt Lucinda after a fire Jan. 23, 1928, took the lives of her parents and two of her brothers. She attended the University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming, and nurses training in Pueblo, Colorado. She married Halsey V. "Mack" Hansel, Sept. 23, 1943. They bought a ranch in Tuscarora, Nevada, which was later sold to Bing Crosby. They then purchased a ranch at Jiggs, Nevada, where they ranched until 1962.

Marian A. Weythman
Marian A. Weythman, 86. A 65 year Monitor resident, passed away on Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, at Colonial Vista Convalescent Center, following a brief illness.

She was born on Dec. 24, 1928 to the late George and Thelma (Wheeler) Rumohr in Omak, Washington. At an early age, she moved to the Wenatchee Valley, first to Leavenworth and eventually to Wenatchee. She attended school in Wenatchee, ultimately graduating from Wenatchee High School with the class of 1947. She met Donald L. "Don" Weythman and they were later united in marriage on April 9, 1949 in Wenatchee. They made their home together on the Weythman homestead orchards in Monitor.

Ponhee A. Whaley
Ponhee A. Whaley, 92, a resident of Wenatchee and a longtime resident of the upper Wenatchee Valley, died Tuesday Dec. 16, 2014 at Maple Lodge Adult Family Home.

Ponhee was born on Feb. 27, 1922 to Milas and Nancy (Smelcer) Green at Sevier County Tennessee where she was raised and received her early education. She married Dewey Whaley on Nov. 5, 1938 at Pittman Center, Tennessee and they made their first home in the Sevierville Area, and in December of 1942, they came west to Leavenworth. She worked at the Cashmere Bakery for many years before going to work at the Post Office in Peshastin, retiring after 28 years on April 3, 1987.
