Berta Kornienko, age 93, passed away the morning of June 27, 2014 at her home in Leavenworth, Washington.
Berta was born on her family's farm to Anton Bartlsberger and Maria (Hofbauer) Bartlsberger in the Bavarian region of Germany at Ashocking near Mettenhausen on April 19, 1921. After graduating from school, she worked for a farmer in Bavaria and resided in Bavaria until 1951 when she immigrated by steamship to the United States with her husband Gregori Kornienko and two of her children, Herb and Kathie. Their port of entry was New Orleans where they spent a short time in the south west before moving to Los Altos Hills, California where they worked at Hidden Villa Ranch for Frank and Josephine Duvenek. They also lived at Hidden Villa Ranch in the house known as the "Kremlin House" before moving to their home on Cowper Street in Palo Alto, California.
Taking up residence in Palo Alto Berta worked as a homemaker and later worked for several years for Drs. Walter and Irene Cannon of Palo Alto, CA helping care for their children; Lucas, Annatina, Barbara and Christopher. Berta remained in Palo Alto until 1999 when she moved to Leavenworth, Washington to live with her daughter Mary (Kornienko) Morse and her son-in-law Don.
Berta enjoyed gardening, cooking and housework, as well as keeping track of her cat Mitsy and dog Tasha, both of which provided much enjoyment to her.
Berta was preceded in death by her Grandparents Anton and Anna (Brunnhuber) Hofbauer; Her Father and Mother Anton and Maria (Hofbauer) Bartlsberger; and her seven brothers and sisters, all of Bavaria. She is also preceded in death by her daughter-in law Linda L. Kornienko.
Berta is survived by her son Herbert Kornienko and his companion Ann Stillingfleet of Sunnyvale, California and his two children Robert S. Kornienko and his wife Sabrina (Chan) Kornienko of San Jose, California and their two children Ryan and Teia; and his daughter Lori B. (Kornienko) Pezzoni and her husband Angelo O. Pezzoni of San Jose, California and their twin girls Hailey & Paige. Her daughter Maria (Bartlsberger) Gmeineder and her husband Joseph Gmeineder of Trieshing, Germany and their three children Martina, Joseph and Martin and their families all in Bavaria. Her daughter Katharina (Kornienko) Mundorff and her husband John J. Mundorff, III of Redwood City, California and her daughter Mary (Kornienko) Morse and her husband Don M. Morse of Leavenworth, Washington.
Berta will be remembered as a loving mother who enjoyed life to the fullest by her remaining family, relatives and friends. A day of reflection was held at her home in Leavenworth on July 4, 2014.
