Joyce Kuyk, 88, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on Jan. 24, 2014 at her home in Leavenworth, Wash. Born Marcella Joyce Jordan on Feb. 6, 1925, Joyce grew up in Pasadena, Calif., attending Pasadena Community College and graduating from UCLA in 1948. As a joyous, young interpretive dancer, she brought the beauty of rhythm, motion and drama to the stage. She met her husband to be, Charles F.G. Kuyk, Jr. (Charlie), on an ice rink in Pasadena where she was an accomplished figure skater and Charlie, a hockey player and young U.S. Marine. After a four-year engagement, while Charlie attended West Point, which had a no-marriage restriction, they were married upon graduation in 1950 at the West Point chapel.
Joyce lived life to the fullest. A happy, positive person she lived 24 years in Pasadena with her family and was beginning a dancing career but traded it all for a commitment to marriage and the nomadic life of a career military wife. As a young mother, she raised three wonderful children while helping manage 25 demanding family moves to 13 states and the District of Columbia, for new military assignments. Joyce and Charlie lived for 20 years in the Puget Sound area after Charlie's military retirement before deciding to move to Leavenworth where they could enjoy easy access to the great outdoors. They selected a lovely home with a large garden and beautiful view.
Joyce had a true flair for interior design and making beautiful floral arrangements. She was a talented seamstress as well. Her homes over the years have reflected her love of fine art. In later years, she became an avid reader and was especially grateful for the local mail order library. She immensely enjoyed her grandchildren, taking great interest and pride in all their activities. The joy of her last year was a vivacious great grandson.
In December 2013, Joyce's health deteriorated rapidly. She spent several days in the hospital followed by a few days of hospice care at home with family before she passed away. She was deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed.
Joyce is survived by her husband Charlie, son Charlie III (Merri Ellen) of Chicago, Ill., daughters Kathy (Mike Oswald) of Gresham, Ore. and Kim (Paul Novotny) of Chicago, Ill., brother Joseph Jordan (Nancy) of Flagstaff, Ariz. and sister Laurie Jordan of Los Angeles, Calif., five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth is handling the arrangements.
