Arnold "Arnie" Mayfield, 88, a 60 year Leavenworth resident, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 at Mountain Meadows Memory Care facility in Leavenworth. He was born July 17, 1924 to Elmer and Myrtle Marie (Cox) Mayfield at Lead, S.D. Arnie was the oldest of seven siblings. In 1930, he moved to Washington state with his family where he received his early education. While attending high school at Wapato in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II. He was stationed in England and was among those that landed at Normandy Beach. Arnie received his honorable discharge in 1944. Arnie moved to Leavenworth in 1953 where he ran the night shift at the Mobil gas station for many years. He also worked at Boeing, United States Forest Service, Peshastin Fruit, and Peshastin Lumber and Box over the years. He was a member of the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church and the American Legion. He is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Taylor and Marilyn Mayfield of Leavenworth, Jack and Nellie Mayfield of Moses Lake; two sisters and brother-in-law, Jeanne Hake of Yakima and Sharon and David Rayfield of Leavenworth and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his dad, Elmer, in 1962 and his mother, Marie, in 1998; two sisters, Nib in 1993 and Joanne in 1984. At Arnie's request, there will be no services, however, memorials may be made in his name to the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church or Mountain Meadows. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
