A much loved husband, father, grandfather and brother, died at Central Washington Hospital, Wenatchee on Saturday, October 20, 2012 from a massive stroke. Jean was recovering from a recent motorcycle accident but was happily engaged in his daily life until the day of his death. His big smile and can-do approach to every challenge were his trademarks.
Jean was born to Imogene Hanson and Sigurd Hanson in Los Angeles, Calif. on September 28, 1943. He resided with his parents and four younger siblings in Los Angeles. Jean married the love of his life, Helen, in May 1967. They settled in Cerritos, Calif. where they had two sons, Erik and Neil. Jean worked in sales for Lever Brothers, which took him to live in Redmond, Wash.. Jean, Helen and their sons lived there for 35 years. Jean graduated from Central Washington University in 1984 with a BS in accounting. He joined Safeway's management team, retiring in 2003. Jean's quick intellect and amazing memory made him a valuable resource for family, friends and co-workers.
Jean was a loving father who instilled wonderful values in his sons' hearts and minds. He taught them how to responsibly manage school, sports, jobs, fun and relationships. He loved to water ski with them but especially enjoyed camping. His sons have great memories of Jean camping with them in National Parks and National Monuments. Jean felt blessed to have four beautiful grandchildren, Hope, Malia, Reese and Johanna. He marveled at their energy and capacity for fun and laughed with them whenever they came to visit. Family was always Jean's highest priority and his joy.
In 2007 Jean and Helen built their home in Leavenworth, Wash., where he resided until his death. Jean loved the Leavenworth area where he could visit, work with and enjoy his many friends. He was an active member of the Leavenworth Lions, serving on the board and volunteering for many fundraisers; Saddlerock Evangelical Presbyterian Church, serving on the Property Committee; and Columbia River Chapter of the Harley Owners' Group, serving as Membership Chair. Jean loved woodworking, was an avid cook and had a passion for gardening. He spent many hours in his garden designing landscaping and lawn areas, building vegetable and flower beds, designing and making walking paths. He loved to see vegetables and flowers grow from seed. It was important to Jean that he made his garden a friendly place for birds.
Jean is now at home with his Lord. He leaves behind his wife Helen of Leavenworth Wash.; sons Erik of Boulder Colo. and Neil of Seattle Wash.; daughter-in-law Amy of Boulder Colo; grandchildren Hope, Malia, Reese, Johanna all of Boulder Colo; brother, Allen; sisters Elena, Janet and Linda. Jean was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Memorial Service is on November 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Saddlerock Evangelical Presbyterian Church at 1400 So. Miller, Wenatchee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests sending memorial gifts to Leavenworth Lions Scholarship Fund, PO Box 113, Leavenworth Wash., 98826.
