The squeaky wheel is getting greased
Note: Education spending is shaping up to be the biggest issue of this legislative session. I have intentionally held this column until after this week's local levy votes in order to avoid having it impact that election.

First let's examine a few facts about education in Washington state:
According to the Center on Education Policy 63 percent of the 2149 public schools in the state have failed to meet Adequate Yearly Progress Requirements as set by the No Child Left Behind Act.
Washington state's per student expenditures for education are 7 percent below the national average.
Washington state already provides nearly 30 percent more of the revenue for funding public education compared to the national average.
Per student expenditure for education in Washington state in 2014 (the latest available data) were still below the amount spent in 2010 by 6/10 of a percent.

Let's just get this straight
Two Washington Democrats filed suit in Federal Court to allow them to "vote their conscience" when the Electoral College met on Dec. 19 to elect the next President. These two Democrats were clearly confused. Being an Electoral College delegate does not make them a "super voter." More importantly, their suit makes no sense.
As an Electoral College delegate they are representatives of the voters of Washington State. They are charged with the responsibility of voting for the candidate who won the popular vote in Washington. News flash - Hillary Clinton (psst.. a Democrat!) won the popular vote in Washington. So, these so called Democrats want you to believe they did not want to vote for the Democrat?

Republicans challenged by the enormity of change
It will come as no surprise to my regular readers that I have been no fan of the Affordable Care Act - another of those aptly named liberal programs cleverly designed to deceive the general populace.
The Washington Policy Center has just released a study on the status of the unaffordable care act or Obamacare. Here are the key findings:
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also called Obamacare, became law six years ago and is a clear policy failure according to the goals set by its supporters.
The ACA has not provided universal health insurance coverage, decreased rising health care costs, or allowed Americans to retain their existing health insurance plans and doctors.

Some thoughts on making America Great Again
In the December issue of the Wenatchee Business Journal we had the story of a long time local business that is shutting its doors because they can no longer compete with the Internet - specifically Amazon.com. That story reminded me of the importance of supporting our local businesses. And with the holiday shopping season underway it is especially important to remember to support local businesses that give so much back to our community. Here are some important facts to remember:

Relocation advice
t is always a pleasure to read in the Echo that another "Never Trumper" wants to leave Leavenworth for resettlement to Canada. I offer my assistance to Mr. Tom Guthrie in achieving his relocation dream. So many liberals such as Cher, Barbara Streisand, Al Sharpton and other Hollywood stars bray like a Donkey in their desire to move to Canada, but they never seem to have the mojo to do so. Where they have failed, I want you to succeed.

Fidel is dead but nothing has changed
Cuban dictator Fidel Castro died last week. There were celebrations in Florida but in the immortal words of Hillary Clinton, "What difference does it make?" None.
The country is and has been under the thumb of Fidel's brother Raul for since 2008. Raul has been the head of the Armed Forces for 49 years and a rebel commander in the 1950s. In other words, he was equally responsible for the repressive regime and there is no indication he is likely to change the direction of government in Cuba.

Surprise, surprise - environmentalists want to take out the dams
Last week I received a press release from a "coalition of environmentalists" who claim they want to save our wild salmon. The following is an excerpt of that release:
Across the Pacific Northwest, people have been speaking out to advocate for solutions to save endangered salmon in the Columbia-Snake River Basin. This week, hundreds are expected to turn out to hearings in Spokane, Lewiston, and Walla Walla to call for the removal of four dams on the Lower Snake River. But the government agencies that oversee dam operations have failed to set up a process that invites meaningful public participation, leaving those attending the public meetings feeling frustrated and disenfranchised.
