For the first time in years, I'm beginning to feel a little skittish about the markets and economy. It's an odd feeling. Not only because the markets are at all-time highs, but also because the last eight years are littered with embarrassed financial "experts" who predicted imminent doom. Of course, I'm not going to be nearly that dramatic about it, so I'll put it like this: I don't see much that can push us forward -- but I see lots of things that could push us back. Last weeks killing of five white police officers by a black sniper in Dallas is a demonstration of the failure of America's war on racism. In 2008 progressives were anxious to show the world how we had moved past our racist history by electing the first black president. On Friday I was parked on Interstate 84 for 2 hours while traffic was "rerouted" around the oil train accident in the Columbia Gorge. It was 98 degrees and most car air conditioning doesn't work well when the engine is idling! But it provided me with time to surf the radio waves for reactions to the news of the day.
First let me say that I can't wait for the flood of condemnations by the environmentalists about the horrible economic damage created by this disaster. I am sure they will be filing lawsuits to prevent future potential damage caused by shipping oil by train. However, let's not forget that these are the same people who have managed to shut down every new proposed refinery and pipeline that have been put on the drawing boards forcing oil companies to rely on trains to ship their raw material to their refineries Saturday, July 30, 2016
Imagine our founding fathers sitting around and debating the Declaration of Independence. Questions like, what do you mean by "all men are created equal"; or, "they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.." arose. I am sure there were many who protested and said they were not pledging their lives, fortunes or sacred honor unless their specific grievances were addressed. But ultimately they came together and the miracle of the United States was born. Fast forward 240 years and uncomfortable with primary voters choice of Donald Trump many self professed conservatives have declared they cannot support Trump. They are advising voters choose another candidate or don't vote. Thursday, July 28, 2016
This week I received an opinion column from former Democratic Congressman Lee H. Hamilton from Indiana. Hamilton was railing about how "those who know congress best" are shaking their heads over the inaction of the current congress. Thursday, June 2, 2016
