Canary in a Coal Mine

I am writing regarding Bill Cowles letter in last week's Leavenworth Echo. I am not Anti-Gun nor Anti-Second Amendment.

My background is almost 30 years training and work in Quality Control and as an Analyst using facts, statistics, comparisons, and trends to resolve issues. Bill, there are 16 States (CA,CTCO,DE, IA,HI,IL,MD,MA,MI,NE,NJ,NY,NC,PA,RI) plus Washington DC that have already expanded criminal background checks on gun sales in the United States. They've documented considerable decline in violence with guns since implementing their new law. Only a few to consider: 39 percent fewer Police Officers killed with handguns; 38 percent fewer Women murdered by an intimate partner.

You obviously don't keep up with the news and interviews coming out of Western Washington or perhaps nationally, nor legitimate web sites documenting and tracking statistics on the benefits of expanding criminal background checks to all gun sales. You and Jerry Griffin are stuck in the past and tunneled. This trend is becoming a problem in our Country. What one does not want to hear or know, they bury their head in the sand. You complain about our Government, but I ask you what about uninformed

The CDC for 2010 recorded 31,076 Americans lost their lives to gun shots and that 73,505 additional Americans were treated in ER with non-fatal gun shots. Factor in a minimum of 2 family members per victim impacted by this gun violence. That's over 200,000 Americans affected in 2010, impacted from deaths, injuries, violence, threats, and financial burden which carries on and affecting their lifetime. And then there's taxpayer financial burden for unpaid hospital and medical bills, the deterioration of neighborhoods and devaluation of property.

You are stuck on the Second Amendment and that "nothing could be done to prevent" those horrific mass killings and shootings. Your answer is to vote yes to I591 and leave everything to business as usual. You are wrong. Not everyone should own a gun, is capable of responsible gun ownership, or can even learn to operate and own a gun responsibly. And because you say nothing could be done to prevent those horrific shootings and killings, we should do nothing? That is exactly what I591 does for everyone, nothing.

Since the mass shooting and killings, children and adults have been educated to not ignore statements or threats that can cause harm to anyone. No matter how small that statement or threat, to report it. And it's working! Three planned mass shootings and killings at schools and homes in the United States were averted just this month due to people reporting what they heard or saw. Change can happen, be positive, and save lives. Violence only feeds more violence.

I-594 will expand criminal background checks on all gun sales and transfers with some exceptions. The cost is very minor to private sellers for the criminal background check and can you put a price on saving lives? We can start to curb the violence in our State just like the other 16 States and Washington DC. I594 Starts a systematic way to keep the guns out of the hands of criminals and people that should not have them without violating the Second Amendment. We can lower violent crime.

I'm the Canary in the Coal Mine. Please Vote Responsibly.

Vote Yes on I-594

Vote No on I-591

Have a Great Day !

Recycling containers needed

Thanks for your article covering action taken by the city regarding public recycling containers in the downtown area (July 23 issue). Our committee would like to respond to the actions the city has taken.

We appreciate very much the willingness of the city administrators and two committees (Public Works and Design Review) for giving us time to present our proposal for downtown recycling. We are also very pleased the City of Leavenworth is initiating a public recycling program with a few containers in the downtown area. We also thank Projekt Bayern for their willingness to financially assist the start of this program. We sincerely hope this is just a start, and that the program can be expanded to cover more of the downtown area. We feel Leavenworth should be a leader in sustainability. Providing recycling is one way of showing that leadership.

We understand a major factor is the cost, and we know there is a relatively small base of residential units within the city limits who, under current fee structures, would assume that cost. We believe our visitors expect to see recycling containers conveniently located on our city streets, and not having them tarnishes the Leavenworth image. If recycling is truly a high priority, we hope ways can be found to implement it without burdening current residential customers. Alternative revenue sources from the new parking lots or the business tax could help to make the public recycling program cost effective.

Junk science

Who would have thought that junk science would rise to the level of importance that we see today, and supply the brain dead with fodder to make them more deadly while seeming more educated.

The Cain's (Gn. 4:1) of the world are slurping up the disgusting brew of hell under the guise of science, produced by none other than Obamas science Czar Holdren.

Here are some of his excrements: Legalize compulsory abortions, single moms could have their babies taken away by the government, or force them to have an abortion, introduce mass sterilization through drugs in the water-supply as long as it does not harm live stock.

I am getting violently ill. At the thought of no one having the backbone to put an end to these morons ideas.

So I chose to give just one actual copy of the morons ideas:

"If this could be accomplished, security might be provided by an armed international organization, a global analogue of a police force. Many people have recognized this as a goal, but the way to reach it remains obscure in a world where factionalism seems, if anything, to be increasing. The first step necessarily involves partial surrender of sovereignty to an international organization."

The media have taken a page from Obamas play book and chosen to be absent. Maybe the reasons for these are they are not speaking about my sons and daughters. You'll find the rest of this mans idiotic ideas under Obama on population control on the internet. This reminds me of the Nazi regime. Oh, disagreement with policies this airhead dreams up will set you up for a reeducation session.

I cannot be silent about this, because if I am, I will be equally guilty of the blood of the innocent. We are not free to ignore the cries of the poor, the weak, the unborn, the voiceless, the marginalized. But I am happy to have the freedom and the power to raise my voice and shout and draw attention to this and other issues. You may want to know who and why are we spending tax money on this obviously fraudulent scientist?

Vote for Hawkins!

I have had the opportunity to work with Brad Hawkins on several occasions during his tenure as our 12th district representative. I have always found Representative Hawkins to be accessible and engaged in those issues impacting his constituents. He and his staff work diligently on behalf of the 12th district and I believe that he will continue to represent us well as our next State Senator.
