Remember the second amendment
Brett Mathews Wenatchee

I felt it necessary to respond to the letter from Kenneth G. Ramey, Paso Robles concerning, well, a number of topics. His first assumption is that the militia at the time of the revolutionary war was defined as a body of men under Geo. Washington. What do our founders say?

"A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves ..." Richard Henry Lee

"Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence ... from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day events, occurrences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable ... the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good." George Washington

"The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that ... it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; ... " Thomas Jefferson

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them." George Mason, Co-author of the Second Amendment

His other contention is that the victory was won with firearms meant for food. No disagreement there, but the delusion that they were somehow inferior to the military arms of the time are false. All arms of the time were single shot rifles (or muskets) and single shot pistols. Many hunting rifles of the time had rifled barrels versus smooth bore muskets for the military. What does this mean? The hunting rifles of the time were more accurate and more deadly than the military arms of the time. According the co-writer of the second amendment. George Mason, the "whole people" were the militia, not what Kenneth Ramey wishes it to be.

Mr. Ramey also states we have militias today, that operate "subversively". That is true, some are those who caused trouble years back, but according to many sources in our own government some are also "non citizens" from overseas. The average citizenry who has bought the so called assault rifles fearing the government are not the subversive militias, it's the average citizen. Mr. Ramey also seems to say, any person who claims to defend their right to keep and bear arms should be considered to be mentally unfit to own arms. Really? Because I believe in our constitution, I am mentally unfit? Once again, what would our founders say?

"And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms....The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants" (Thomas Jefferson in a letter to William S. Smith).

"The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -- Thomas Jefferson

Mr. Ramey also states that these crazed people of late who have perpetrated the latest mass killings using "military weaponry" is due to their "anti-government paranoia". First, I do not recall any of these tragedies involved any firearms that were military firearms or surplus military firearms. The AR-15 is not a military firearm, it has been used by sportsman all across the country for over 40 years. Secondly, I believe most, if not all, were left leaning, Democrat voters and no mention in any news reports about any "anti-government paranoia. And incidentally, all of the young males who perpetrated these crimes where on one form of psychotropic drug or another in the very recent past.

I don't know what bothers me the most, the low information voter, who does not take the time to learn the whole story or the facts, or those who throw statements out into the public and assume most people will be fooled by these misstatements. This ongoing gun debate is an opportunity for Americans to learn the facts and reason behind our whole Constitution, not just the second amendment. I refuse to be called "mentally unfit" and it is not my year to turn the other cheek.

Lastly, if we do not learn from the past, we are doomed to repeat it. You know where that lead. The truth is on our side.

"This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!"

Adolph Hitler Chancellor, Germany, 1933
