Gun Control
Dear Editor,

Yesterday the President proposed a number of gun control measures as a means to stem violence in America. He made some points which have merit and deserve discussion.

1. Initiatives for school safety in the form of "School Resource Officers" and counselors.

2. Easier access to mental health resources.

3. Quick and accurate background checks for persons buying guns.

4. Robust penalties for anyone committing a crime with a gun.

As a law enforcement official, it is one of my primary duties to promote safety. It is also my responsibility to ensure the rights of all citizens are protected. When we impose rules on people, we need to remember it does not only impact those who would be criminals, but also those who are upstanding citizens and who deserve all the freedom our society can offer. There are many people in our community who have no criminal record, and no serious emotional problems; People who are teachers, police officers, and businessmen and women, and who have fought in our county's wars to protect us and our interests. When laws are made, the liberties of these people are sometimes not considered. In this case our 2nd amendment right to keep and bear arms.

I am not convinced that limiting magazine capacity, or banning a rifle for features (which may be only cosmetic) that make it an "assault" weapon are the answer to stemming violence. Criminals will find a way to obtain firearms or find a way to work around laws. We can't legislate everyone out of harm's way without adversely impacting our freedom and liberties.
