1/16/2013 4:21:00 PM Lunatic control, not gun control
We all mourn for the victims of the recent mass school shootings. It is important to remember that people kill people, not guns. People driving cars kill about 40,000 people a year on our public highways, but it would be useless folly to ban cars just like it would be useless to ban guns. In the recent mass shootings a lunatic used guns to murder many innocent and vulnerable children, this is not the first time and it won't be the last time either.
In this scenario we should ban lunatics from society, not guns. The most effective way to stop a bad guy with a gun is by stopping the bad guy by a good guy with a gun. Disarming innocent people does not protect innocent people, it only endangers them from lunatics or criminals that don't obey gun laws anyway. If the government bans guns (gun control) then the criminals and lunatics will still get guns and have an easier time victimizing unarmed innocent people. It would be a better and more effective solution to ban lunatics and criminals by more effective enforcement of our current laws and enacting lunatic control laws. Lunatics are easy to detect before they kill a bunch of innocent people.
In the early 1960's California Governor Jerry (Moonbeam) Brown opened the doors to all the lunatic asylums and turned all the unfortunate lunatics loose on the streets. Successful lawsuits by the ACLU asserted that locking them up was violating their rights. As a deputy sheriff I had encountered many of them and could do nothing until they broke a law. These were people that were mentally ill and could not care for themselves and were a danger to society. This situation prevails in all the United States today. It is very difficult to have a mentally ill person committed for his or her own good in the absence of a criminal violation.
The worst mass murders in our country's history do not involve guns at all; most involve explosives, vehicles, jet airliners, box cutters and a lunatic "religion". To assert that banning guns will stop mass murders is ludicrous. It is the lunatic or criminal operating any device that should be banned, not the device. Guns don't kill people anymore than silverware and dishes make people fat.
A good man with a gun will usually stop a bad man with a gun. So called "gun free zones" are simply advertising that we are unarmed here and unable to defend ourselves from a cowardly lunatic or criminal bent on ignoring any laws and hunting for the easiest group of victims that can't defend themselves. It is not logical or realistic to ban guns to stop mass shootings, however many misinformed and overly emotional people have this emotional over reaction. Many people have differing opinions on this issue and opinions should be based on reality, not on emotions.
It is your right to choose whether you want to cower in your home, a theater, a school, or a shopping mall while some lunatic methodically murders you and/or other innocent people. I will always choose to protect others and myself with a gun. I advocate that all schools, theaters, shopping malls and other so called "gun free zones" have an armed security guard or cop visibly armed with a gun to dissuade criminals or lunatics from victimizing groups of innocent people. This is reality.
All the horrible tyrants down through history who mass murdered their own were all advocates of gun control so they could more easily abuse the population and maintain control without obstruction. That's why we have the second amendment to our constitution that Obama chooses to ignore and wants to eliminate. The second amendment is there to ensure that a future tyrannical government respects all the other constitutional amendments. Our right to keep and bear arms is inviolate and invaluable to our self-defense, both from lunatics, criminals and an out of control tyrannical government. Control lunatics and criminals, not guns.
More gun control will not reduce mass murders, but it will make for more innocent unarmed victims of criminals and lunatics who don't obey laws anyway and will still get guns. Think about it.
