Dear Editor,

Have you noticed the Blue Fescue that is planted in many of the half barrels downtown? For three seasons the planters are a riot of blooms and foliage, but then they look sadly empty when the flowers are pulled up in late fall; stark, reminders that summer is gone. It is sadder still that empty planters tend to become impromptu garbage receptacles! What a delightful idea for the City to plant those sassy fescues! They sparkle when dripping with rain, they look cute and cozy when snuggled in a blanket of snow. It will be interesting to see where the fescues will be moved to when the flowers return to their barrels next spring.

Have you walked Waterfront Park lately? It is one of Leavenworth's great treasures. With a great variety of loops, you can tailor your route for a long or short walk along the river. Enjoy the river and mountain views, spot eagles, osprey, dippers, ducks (and the occasional heron), all just a block from downtown! One thing I don't enjoy seeing on my walks these days is the ugly day-glow yellow arrow attached to a piling where the river splits around Blackbird Island. I know it is there to direct the hoards of summer tubers, but it's offensive in this seasons color scheme of muted blues, browns, grays and white. Given the season, tiny splashes of Christmas red rose hips are a more appropriate accent color.
