Your Mom told me of your conversation about the coming election. I must say I was saddened to hear your response. Mostly because in my 84 years on this planet this truthfully is the most important election ever. There are obviously tons of individual issues that can be debated most of which have significant importance; debt limits, rights of women, war practices, taxes and tax code, health care, etc., etc. (Many of these, on both sides, are being misstated because of the nature of today's election process. Too much reliance on appealing to emotion rather than fact.)
But there is one overriding all-important consideration that simply trumps all the individual issues. That is the fundamental question of where this Constitutional Republic is headed in the future; future in the case of this email means your future, that of your boys and that of your future grandchildren. There can be no question which basic form of government the present administration is promoting, has for the last four years and definitely will continue in the next four if reelected. That is Socialistic vs. Democratic; big government playing a much larger part on individual rights and resources of citizens. With this trend more people get more and greater personal benefits but also become more beholden to their government and in the process lose ever-increasing rights and freedom.
It is very obvious that the huge increase in citizens being increasingly dependent on their government has a huge cost, financially, emotionally, politically and style of life. This has great short term appeal to many segments of society as handouts seem to become a right rather than something earned. The problem is that it grows like topsy to the point it can't be sustained except under ever-tighter control of people's lives. Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Ireland and other European countries are caught up in this scenario as we speak and the responses of the people to their governments who are desperate to stem the tide of fiscal unbalances are frightening. America is in a very early stage of this progression.
Am I saying this will evolve in America in some future time. Quite possibly if unchecked because it has over and over since the days of Caesar and before. In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinborough had this to say: "A democracy is always temporary in nature. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy." This sums up where the present administrations policies are leading us.
Unfortunately, it is an undeniable fact that the Obama administration (and Gregoire's/Inslee's) has espoused this form of government with the narcissistic desire to be thought of as true benefactors of the citizenry. And so they have for a period of time but Newton's Third Law (for every action there is an equal reaction in the opposite direction) will catch up at some uncertain date unless checked. The tipping point is now.
So my darling daughter, please give this some additional thought, beyond individual points of interest. You, of course, have the absolute right to vote however you wish. But I would hope that you will at least consider this as it will definitely have consequences for your children and then theirs. And promise me one thing: accept the fact that every single vote in this or any other election does count. It's your right to undeniably contribute to society, costs nothing to you and, repeating, does count.
